Your Child's Learning

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, by being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outdoors.

The Preschool follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, which explains how and what your child shoul dbe learning to support their healthy development.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development. Children should mostly develop the three prime areas first:

  1. Communication and language
  2. Physical development
  3. Personal, social and emotional development

These areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four specific areas:

  1. Literacy
  2. Mathematics
  3. Understanding the world
  4. Expressive arts and design

These seven areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but its suitable for very young children, and its designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests.

Each child will have a key person who will help them settle into the Preschool and takes a special interest in them. They will follow their progress through their time at the Preschool and may undertake observations during play to help in assessing their development. They will undertake the 2-3 year progress check and discuss this with you. Your child’s key person is also there to share any news or concerns you may have and to help in any way they can. Your key person will also maintain your child’s learning journal, which will be available online through Tapestry. This record will be assembled over the course of your child’s time at the Preschool, which is not only a record of your child’s learning and development, but a lovely keepsake. You can see your child’s Tapestry learning journal online anytime by accessing the app and registering. This will be available as a download for you to keep when your child leaves the Preschool.

Our SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)Coordinator monitors the progress of children with any special educational needs and disabilities and liaises with relevant professionals, agencies outside the Preschool, when needed, and the parents/guardians. We have worked with children on the autistic spectrum as well as children with global developmental delay, hearing impairment and English as a second language. We will be glad to talk with you about any concerns you may have about your child’s development.
